Obituary

Leon Salviejo Rivas was born January 7, 1943 in Nacogdoches, Texas to Augusta Triana Rivas and Luis Rivas and passed away at his home in Arlington, Texas on July 7, 2020. Leon was preceded in death by his father, Luis, and his mother, Augusta as well as brothers Albert Triana, Luis Salviejo, and Phillip Rivas.

At a very young age Leon lost his dad who was trying to save the lives of the men for whom he was responsible. Leon was then enrolled in Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Nacogdoches which is where his spiritual life developed. He spoke highly of Sister Adrian, a nun who was his teacher and guide who took a special interest in him. Leon began at an early age assisting the priest during Mass as an alter boy and continued his love for the Church with the understanding of helping others as Christ taught him. Leon was always the first to lend a hand without being asked.

Leon attended Thomas J. Rusk Junior High in seventh grade and Nacogdoches High School. After High School, Leon joined the Marines and eventually was sent to Vietnam which left residual effects on him until the day he died. He continued to share his faith with his men and became Sgt. Rivas to them. He took his responsibility for them very seriously, just as his dad had done so many years before.

After being discharged, Leon settled in California and began a career in restaurant management by starting from the ground up.
He became Regional Manager and moved to the East coast. Eventually, Leon settled in Boise, Idaho and married. He had a son whom he adored named Alexander Salviejo.

Leon received an invitation to NHS 50th reunion and reunited with June Bryan, his seventh grade sweetheart. Leon and June were married on February 14, 2014.
Leon had traveled extensively with his Catholic church and June had enjoyed traveling as well. Together, they crowded their six years into a lifetime of love, happiness, and laughter as they traveled to many countries, met interesting people, and had many unusual adventures.

Leon is survived by his wife, June and son, Alexander Salviejo, his brother, Mack Salviejo, his sister, Dolores Potts and husband, Bill Potts, his sister, Chris Kieny and husband, George Kieny as well as many nieces and nephews whom he loved deeply. Leon’s welcoming smile and fun-loving personality will be missed.

Visitation and service will be held on Tuesday, July 14 and then Leon will be laid to rest at DFW National Cemetery in Grand Prairie, TX. Leon will lie by his fellow compatriots where he will finally find peace.
