Obituary

Mary-Dawn Burnett Hudspeth, 60, went to her heavenly home leaving her earthly home with her adoring husband and sons on Saturday, October 3, 2020. She stepped into the arms of her Savior after bravely living with complications from a brain injury in 2012 and a stage 4 colon cancer diagnosis in 2019.

A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, November 7, 2020 at First Christian Church, Arlington, TX. The family has requested that in lieu of flowers donations be made to a charity of choice.

Mary-Dawn was born on November 7, 1959, in New York, NY to Don and Mary Joyce Burnett. After a few moves with her parents, her father set up his practice as a local dentist, and she was raised in Arlington, TX. She went to high school with her beloved husband, Tom Hudspeth, but it was not until after college and careers were well on their way that they were united, fell in love, and became husband and wife on September 21, 1996. Her oldest son, Trey, was born in 1997 and Matthew came along in 1999. Mary-Dawn’s sons became her passion and her greatest accomplishment.

In the words found in Mary-Dawn’s teaching philosophy, she believed “that teachers need to communicate that they believe the students can master the subject matter and be successful. If students know that the teachers believe in them, they will begin to believe in themselves.” Mary-Dawn had a way of not only helping students believe in themselves but everyone with whom she encountered. She was the greatest encourager most of us have ever met!

Teaching certificates were held by Mary-Dawn in the areas of Computer Literacy, Information Processing of Technology, and Elementary Education. She obtained a Mid-Management certification in 1996 and used her leadership skills as the Director of Instructional Technology in the Hurst-Euless-Bedford Independent School District, where she planned and implemented a $22 million technology bond. In addition, while in HEB, she led the implementation of technology into the curriculum, including distance-learning capabilities at three secondary locations. As the Coordinator of Instructional Technology in the Grapevine-Colleyville Independent School District from 1992-1996, she led the work for a $7.5 million technology bond and supervised 12 instructional technologists. Upon the birth of her sons, Mary-Dawn moved her skills to Martin High School in Arlington where she taught multi-media web mastering. Her career as a teacher began in 1984 and ended with her greatest accomplishment, homeschooling her two sons.

Beyond her family and friends, Mary-Dawn adored dogs, going to the lake or mountains, and creative tasks, such as decorating her home for the holidays. She was an active member of First Christian Church where she most recently enjoyed participating in her Sunday School class and the Chancel choir. Supporting her sons and husband while they were active in the Boys Scouts of America resulted in two Eagle Scout awards for Trey and Matt. She proudly supported her sons!

If you needed encouragement, seeing Mary-Dawn was the answer. She told countless people that they were “wonderful,” even in her times of great distress. She found joy in singing, dancing, and praising her Savior, regardless of her circumstances.

Mary-Dawn is preceded in death by: her brother, Doug Burnett who passed away in 2003, and her parents, Drs. Don and Mary Joyce who both passed away in 2019. She is survived by her husband Tom Hudspeth, her mother-in-law, Carolyn Farrel, and her two sons, Trey Hudspeth and Matthew Hudspeth. In addition to her sisters and brothers-in-law, Mary Helen Burnett of Arlington, Texas, Jan and Tom Halford of Madison, MS, and Glen and Tami Hudspeth of Texarkana, TX, she will be missed by her cousins, nieces and nephews and her best friends, affectionately known as the “A Team”.
