Obituary

Captain Matt Thomas Tawater
Saturday, December 10, 1983 - Saturday, October 10, 2020

Matt passed away on October 10, 2020 at a young age of 36 in Arlington, Texas.
He was born December 10, 1983 in Arlington, TX, to Randy and Doris Tawater.

He spent a lot of time in Port Aransas/Rockport TX while working the boat/yacht industry. That’s where he found his passion for the ocean and boats. He then took a job that led him to the Bahamas where he met the love of his life, his Panda. He then proceeded to obtain his goal on acquiring his 100 Ton Master Captain License with the help of his great friend and mentor, Captain Stash. This was no surprise to the family that Matt decided to make a life down there since that’s where we spent our family vacations for his entire life.

Matt lived an adventurist life to the fullest. He never met a stranger and loved the ocean. He was always planning on his next big trip. He traveled and saw many sights that most people only dream of. He was never alone because he had his Panda along his side the entire way.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Thomas and Juanita Tawater and Sarah Lawing Mitchell.

Matt is survived by his parents, Randy and Doris Tawater, Adam Tawater (Loving brother ;), Debbie Olmstead (Longtime Girlfriend, Panda), Connie Miller (Aunt), Julie Puckett (Cousin), Richard and Debby Lawing (Uncle and Aunt), Mike Lawing (Cousin), Albert and Beth Lawing (Cousin), Vance Lawing (Cousin) and numerous cousins, nephews and nieces.

Matt was always willing to share a helping hand. Many times he offered to help me with projects from motorcycles to all kinds of electrical things. Matt was very hands on and could do anything he set his mind to. I always loved hearing about his past adventures and he always had plans for his next one. I watched him grow up and will miss his friendship. The last thing he said to me was "Good friends are hard to come by."
So true,, Captain Matt. Your friend, John Paul Reeves

It was a great honor to have called Matt a dear friend.
I was fortunate enough to have met Matt immediately after he met the love of his life..(his Panda) my best friend Debbie. I knew something was "up" when Debbie called me with such delight in her voice telling me that she had just met this amazing guy while on vacation in the Bahamas and she couldn't wait for me to meet him.
Matt and I hit it off immediately and I was elated to see that he had given back the twinkle in Debbie's eye and the sweet giggle into her laughter.

I cherish the friendship Matt and I had acquired throughout the years of their dating. He was always so kind as to allow me to be the 3rd wheel to many events and had no problem telling me what he thought of the guys I introduced to him (as only a good friend could), it makes me smile knowing he was very protective of Debbie's best friend's heart and I so appreciated it.
I adored Matt and will miss him dearly for a multitude of reasons 1) his friendship 2) his ability to make Debbie smile 3) his random phone calls and texts telling me how much he loved Debbie 4) his amazing ability to make the most mouth-watering meals; some of my absolute favs' his chicken sliders, steaks and fish perfectly seasoned from the grill and his delicious breakfast pizza (an old family recipe) that he shared with me so that I could make it for my guests.

I spoke to Matt a week prior to his passing and he asked me if he could use my place in Florida to "take Debbie away for a romantic getaway" which warmed my heart that after several years of dating he still had "that spark" for her.

The loss of Matt brings tears to my eyes and a sadness in my heart. I will miss him dearly
Rest in Peace, my dear friend.

Renee, he loved you too and was so happy you became his friend too, he loved he could always talk to you. And he did think up the menu whenever you came in town so he could make something special :)

Thinking of you as you celebrate Matt’s exceptional life. So many stories of good times that included Matt have been shared through Debbie and her friends. Although I have not met Matt ~ his joyous nature and adventures life will live on in many people’s memories.
