Rachel Wolfskill Nolen, born February 26, 1953, to Casper George Wolfskill and Alberta Schnick Wolfskill in Kansas City, Missouri, passed away peacefully Sunday, June 6, 2021, at home surrounded by family and love.

Rachel grew up in Arlington. Eventually, she obtained a bachelor’s in social work from the University of Texas at Arlington in 1975. She began her working life at the Red Cross in Arlington, before moving to Virginia and starting at the Department of Mines.

Rachel spent 14 years in Virginia, where she was officially the first single woman in the state to adopt a child, her eldest daughter Lee-Anna Rebecca Zimmerer (née Wolfskill) in 1985.

Rachel returned to Arlington with Lee-Anna in 1991 and began working for the Natural Resources Conservation Service for a time before working for the Federal Aviation Administration until her retirement in 2011.

On July 29, 1993, Rachel married Stephen B. Nolen at First Baptist Church in Arlington. On November 17, 1994, Rachel and Steve welcomed their youngest daughter Julia Corinne Nolen.

Rachel took great enjoyment in playing the piano, singing, sewing, retail therapy and cooking. She loved her family and friends with a fierce intensity and without condition. Rachel dedicated her life to those around her with unwavering kindness and loyalty.

Rachel is survived by her daughters: Lee-Anna and Julia, son-in-law Adam, siblings: Regina McWethy, Martha McClellan, Jeff Wolfskill, Sarah Wolfskill and Andy Wolfskill.

Memorials: Memorial gifts may be made to the Tarrant County Food Bank or Women’s Shelter.

First, let me offer my condolences on Rachel’s passing. My prayers are our with the family. Secondly, I met Rachel when I moved to Arlington in April 1969 and we sat together in the French Horn section of Arlington High School band. I was a newbie to Texas and very nervous about starting a new school. Rachel was so friendly and funny and made me feel welcome from the beginning. I have very fond memories of my HS days and band and she’s one of the reasons why. May your memories of Rachel be as beautiful as mine are of her. Lora Mueller Funderburk

Lora, thank you for sharing your memory of her. I look forward to hearing/reading more and more memories like this of our mother. It doesn’t surprise me one bit that she welcomed you with open arms, a normal practice she passed on to us (her daughters), and we continue on in our daily lives.
